We were delighted to welcome Network Rail to UTC Silverstone earlier this month for a truly impactful and nationally significant event.

Presented by Amy Burrows and Manny Singh Kang—a familiar face to many as one of the remarkable winners of last year’s Pride of Britain Awards—the assembly, titled ‘Living Switched On’, was held in our lecture theatre and focused on the crucial topic of rail safety.

"I had no idea how quickly things can go wrong near the tracks—it really made me think twice," said Lewis, a Year 10 student. "

What made this event particularly special was its national reach. While some of our Year 10 students attended the session in person, the assembly was also live-streamed to thousands of students across the UK. We were honoured to serve as the host site for such a far-reaching initiative, broadcasting live from Silverstone to classrooms nationwide.

The session encouraged students to think critically about making safe and informed choices when using the rail network. Through real-life stories, eye-opening facts, and engaging discussions, the assembly highlighted the dangers associated with railways and equipped students with the knowledge they need to act responsibly around them.

The video stories were powerful. They weren’t just facts; they showed real people who made mistakes and what happened next," added Amelia. "

At UTC Silverstone, we are passionate about providing learning experiences that go beyond the classroom—particularly those that prepare our students for the challenges and responsibilities of the wider world. Hosting this live national broadcast reflects our ongoing commitment to supporting not only the academic growth of our students but also their personal safety and well-being.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Network Rail, Amy Burrows, Manny Singh Kang, and everyone who played a part in organising this memorable event. It was an inspiring and informative morning that we were incredibly proud to be a part of.
