Science (new 2026)

Science

At Key Stage 4, all learners at Silverstone UTC study combined science: Biology, Physics and Chemistry. In each case, the science curriculum is carefully sequenced and spiralled to develop a strong understanding of core concepts upon which students build throughout their studies.

The study of Combined Science enables students to use scientific ideas and evidence to explain biological, chemical and physical phenomena, fostering a deeper appreciation and understanding of the world around them. Studying science develops students’ critical thinking and problem-solving skills, enabling them to make informed predictions, analyse evidence and reach evidence-based conclusions. It also allows students to recognise and apply the important relationship between mathematical concepts and scientific ideas.

In Biology, students explore key concepts including cells and control, genetics, natural selection and genetic modification, health and disease, plant structures and their functions, animal coordination and exchange, and ecosystems and material cycles. The study of Biology develops students’ understanding of living organisms and the interactions between organisms and their environment, while strengthening their ability to analyse data and evaluate scientific evidence.

In Chemistry, students study key concepts including states of matter and mixtures, chemical changes, extracting metals and equilibria, groups in the Periodic Table, rates of reaction and energy changes, fuels and Earth science. The study of Chemistry develops students’ analytical and problem-solving skills and their ability to use evidence, models and scientific explanations to communicate complex ideas.

In Physics, students study motion and forces, conservation of energy, waves, light and the electromagnetic spectrum, radioactivity and astronomy. The study of Physics develops students’ ability to apply mathematical skills to scientific problems and enhances and complements their learning in mathematics, engineering and other STEM subjects.

Throughout Combined Science, students develop their practical and investigative skills through experiments, data analysis and evaluation. They learn how scientific theories are developed and tested and consider how scientific knowledge can be used to understand and respond to real-world issues.

At Key Stage 5, students can extend their scientific learning through further study in subjects such as Physics and other STEM-related qualifications. This allows them to deepen their understanding of core scientific principles and develop the analytical, mathematical and practical skills required for higher education, apprenticeships and employment.

Ultimately, the study of Combined Science at Silverstone UTC seeks to equip learners with the scientific knowledge, practical skills and critical thinking needed to become scientifically literate citizens. It provides a strong foundation for progression into further study, apprenticeships and employment, particularly within our specialist areas of engineering, technology and STEM.
